Listen to The Suzuki Report twice daily Monday-Friday at 9:20am and 4:20pm.

The Suzuki report is a common sense daily message from Canada's best known scientist, environmentalist, and broadcaster.

Dr. David Suzuki has 30 years of award winning work in broadcasting and explains the complexities of science in a compelling and easily understood way.

93.7 JRfm is proud to be working with The David Suzuki Foundation to create a daily feature that will help us all to lead a greener life.

Green Tips

Green at Home:
* Take the David Suzuki Foundation's Nature Challenge to learn more about other ways you can help protect the environment. Visit www.davidsuzuki.org to find out more information.
* Change your light bulbs! Standard light bulbs give off 90 per cent of their energy as heat. New compact fluorescent "spiral" bulbs are 75 per cent more efficient and fit in standard sockets.
* Reduce your home heating and electricity use. A more energy-efficient home will lower your utility bills and reduce the emissions that cause climate change. Unplug appliances and other items in your home when you aren't using them.
* Choose energy-efficient appliances. New refrigerators, for example, use 40 per cent less energy than models made just 10 years ago.
* Walk, bike, carpool, or take transit to get to one of your regular destinations each week.
* Learn about the impacts of air travel and consider vacationing close to home.
* Take care of your trash. Composting all organic waste – and recycling paper, cardboard, cans and bottles – will help reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with landfills.

Green at Work:
* Encourage staff to commit to taking alternative modes of transportation for their daily commute at least once a month. This can include options such as car-pooling, cycling, taking public transit or walking where possible.
* Reduce your staff's environmental impacts from air travel by using video-conferences for meetings.
* Create a recycling program and decrease paper use.
*If you have a fleet of vehicles, try to use the most energy-efficient models possible.

Driving Green:
* Don't "floor it". Flooring the gas pedal wastes gas and leads to drastically higher pollution rates.
* When possible, plan your trips to avoid rush hour. Stop-and-go driving burns gas and increases emissions of smog- forming pollutants.
* Keep your tires properly inflated. For every 3 pounds below recommended pressure (this information is inside your owner's manual), fuel economy goes down by about 1 percent.
* Get a tune-up. A tune-up can increase your fuel economy but make sure all used vehicle fluids are recycled or disposed of safely.
